Trinkets can be Valuable
Daily Ramble 78: Trinkets can be Valuable
In many of the stories we see in comics and games little items can have immense value. In Horizon Zero Dawn today I gained access to an earpiece which opened up a whole new world for Aloy. With it, she’s able to see things from the civilization that fell and I expect she’ll be able to use this device to help her through the game. In DC Universe Rebirth, we end the issue where we started with the watch and we’re reminded that time is a big deal in the whole Rebirth event. But here we have another trinket that is a key piece of the story and one that could very well show up again in later issues. Each of these, in this case, are pieces of technology but they could easily be magic like the Blue Beetle scarab or supernatural like the talismans found in Secret World Legends, but none-the-less, they are valuable items to the story and to the characters.
TNG Communicator
Yesterday we met Aloy our protagonist in Horizon Zero Dawn and we get to start working with her after she is first shunned by the local tribe and then falls into a cave.
Apparently this is not just any cave but it also houses remnants of the old civilization that died off. I’m pretty sure that’ll be part of the longer story we go through – try to figure out what happened. But for now we’re just supposed to explore the cave.
And as we scout around, we find a bunch of things that look interesting but the most significant is a dead body. This is pretty traumatic for Aloy but I guide her to examine the corpse and we find what looks like a Star Trek TNG communicator.
But for some reason it was on the body’s ear…it’s an earpiece, not a communicator. And once we put it on Aloy, she can start seeing all kind os new and wonderful things inside the cave.
Things just come to life with lights and sounds. And even what looks like a ghost, but I think is a hologram.
I’m barely into this game but it’s drawing me forward and I’m totally engrossed with what’s going on and where things seem to be going.
First Look: DC Universe Rebirth – Epilogue
We come to the end of the issue but things are still mind blowing! As we move through space, past the Moon to Mars, we see something that is awfully familiar…it’s the watch from the beginning of the issue…or is it?
It’s sitting on the ground on Mars and it lifts up and we see the inscription as Wally mentioned in the opening pages of the issue, but then it opens up and reassembles itself. And someone asks if they did the right thing since everything worked out in the end while another tells the first, Adrian, nothing ends.
This is clearly a callback to The Watchmen which even if you haven’t read the comic, you can tell from having watched the movie.
This is the big deal everyone was talking about when they first read this issue and I can see why it was watercooler worthy. Trying the end of Watchmen to the current problems in the DC Universe bring up a ton of questions and hopefully we’ll get some answers as Rebirth continues throughout the various titles.
