Morning Ramble 340: Kingsman and Darkfall Rise of Agon
Today I take a look at the new Kingsman trailer and start up in a new game called Darkfall: Rise of Agon – it’s pretty fun so far.
Kingsman
I was surprised when Kingsman: The Secret Service turned out to be so good back in 2014. It seemed to be the light hearted version of 007 that the James Bond franchise turned away from with it’s increasingly dark tone. I do like Daniel Craig but things are definitely less cheeky than the Sean Connery or Roger Moore versions which I liked as well. In any case, I enjoyed the movie a bunch and I’m glad to hear there’s a 2nd installment coming out later this year. I’m looking forward to Kingsman: The Golden Circle and hope it’s just as good and action packed as the first.
Darkfall: Rise of Agon
I tried all weekend to get in and play a bit of this new sandbox that launched on Friday but had some issues. As with all launches, things did not go perfectly but for the most part, it was a success. Sure there were a few times when the admins brought the servers down for updates and other times when the login server had issues, but it seemed people were getting in and playing.
I, however, had issues with the in-game fonts and screen resolution. Once I got into the game I had many troubles creating a character since I could not get the game resolution to properly update to want I wanted – it seemed my 4K screen was gonna be an issue. First I couldn’t see any of the buttons for race selection or appearance…I got through that after a bunch of restarts. Then I couldn’t read all of the ingame text since it was jumbo sized and I could only see the first 15 characters of any of the menus. A search turned up a regedit fix for that, but that was only temporary until I had to start the game client again. Finally, with a patch on Sunday morning, things seemed to resolve themselves and I could play.
So far, so good. I was able to run around grabbing quests and killing a bunch of goblins near the starting town, and from what I can see, this will be a fun game. Sure it’ll take a bit of getting used to since there is no tab-targeting and the mana/stamina/health interactions are new to me, but I like the classless aspect of the game and the fact that skill improvement happens through use. Similar to Wurm Online, it makes sense that if you want to increase your skill with a hammer, you gotta build a few things.
There’s another Darkfall game coming out later this year, but this one suits me well for now. I’m gonna keep with it and see how things progress – from what I’ve heard there’s a really good PvP aspect to the game at the later levels and a sense of unease similar to Eve Online in that you can lose everything you’re carrying if you get ganked. In any case, the first few ‘levels’ I got to try out were fun and I’ll be heading back for more.
