Network Troubles
My WiFi died
I was so sad yesterday afternoon. Shortly after I missed out on Preview Night at Comic-Con, I lost internet connectivity. Not really sure what happened at all, but one minute I was playing SMITE on my PS4, and the next, I wasn’t able to start the next match. And no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get the amber light on my router (which indicates a problem) to turn green.
Amazon to the Rescue
I love Amazon! Even though I had my WiFi problems on the weekend, I was able to research and order a new router and have it sent out the next day. So at 8pm, I received my new gear and was ready to install my new speedy network system.
New Router
I got the Asus RT-AC5300 Wireless Tri-Band Gigabit Router to be my primary connection to the interweb.
Sure, I already picked up a Surfboard modem last year as an upgrade from my Time Warner Cable modem, but this replaces my Apple Extreme router. I really loved the Apple, but something happened yesterday morning and BOOP! One minute I had a connection, the next I couldn’t get anything working.
My new router kinda looks like an alien device and Mrs. Redshirt actually asked if it flew. From my research, it doesn’t do any such thing, but is one of the fastest WiFi routers for home use…we’ll see.
First Time Switch
I also picked up a 8-port Gigabit switch. This’ll connect directly to my router and give me 7 ports for direct Ethernet connection to my network. Most of my gaming devices will connect here – my gaming laptop, my PS4, my XBox One.
My other PC and my MacBook Pro will also get a spot on the switch along with a couple other devices that reside in my office. This is my first switch but I wanted to try to get all the devices I have in my office off the WiFi – they should push data around faster and maybe that’ll help with my WiFi speed too. The reason I needed a switch though, was I have more devices than the 4 ports on my router could handle. Now I’ve got things configured pretty well…I hope…and I’ll hopefully not have to deal with any more network problems.
