Favorite Graphic Novels Read in 2016 – The First Five

I read quite a few graphic novels last year and wanted to highlight a few that I’d recommend for anyone to read. They were all good in various ways and each one is the start of what I’m sure will be good series. So yeah, each of the ones I read last year are the first volume of a longer series – some have completed while others are just starting. I’m planning on reading more of these and recommend anyone interested in some good stories take a look at them as well.

Paper Girls

This was one of my favorites of the year. It’s kinda like if the kids from Stranger Things had to deal with aliens. Basically a group of girls who deliver papers in a small town run into weird things on the morning after Halloween. Aliens, dinosaurs, time travel, and some pretty intelligent young girls…pretty cool.

Letter 44

This was a fun book I read shortly before the presidential primary here in California. The idea is the new President takes office and recieves a letter from the outgoing President informing him of aliens in the asteroid belt and a mission that was sent to go see what they are up to. Political drama, science, aliens and psychology all combine for an interesting read.

Preacher

I read this because I enjoyed the TV show and it’s a toss up if I like this book or the show better. A preacher in a small Texas town becomes possessed by a divine entity…not quite angel, but not quite demon either. Authorities and Angles come after the preacher and interesting things ensue.

Bone

I love these little guys. Fone, Phoney, and Smiley…these Bone brothers are an interesting group. The get kicked outta their town and then get lost and separated. They meet dragons, monsters, and friends and eventually meet back up. This is definitely the start of something fun.

Fables

I read the first 2 volumes of this one.  These two graphic novels are easy reads and great starting points for rookie comic readers. The characters are familiar ones from fairy tales with some interesting twists, like the Big Bad wolf is the sheriff and Snow White is the mayor.

I read more graphic novels that I enjoyed last year but I’ll pause here today.  These 5 are pretty varied but are all good reads.

    • There’s definitely a flavor of Wolf Among Us in the comics. I’ve not played the game but in my graphic novel reading group, a number of people mentioned how the two compliment each other. They provide background for each other and flesh out the world. Someday I’ll get around to the game and check it off my backlog.
