Rambling About Clemson, March, and the Lego Batman Movie
Clemson – NCAA Football Champions
Alabama has had a monster of a football team for the past decade. They’ve won 4 of the last 8 NCAA football championships, but last night they met their better. Last night, in a rematch of last season’s championship game, Clemson beat Alabama 35–31. It was a fun game to watch and I was surprised that the underdogs, that I was rooting for, managed to pull off the upset. I suppose, maybe, I shouldn’t be though since practically every college game I watched this year saw the favorite lose – including the Rose Bowl which was another great game. It’s a game like last night’s that really has me enjoying college football more than the pros. Congratulations to the Tigers!
March Vol 3
The NCAA football championships also has ties to my recent reading in graphic novels. About a month ago, I read through the first volume of Southern Bastards which features a high school football team that is a conduit to getting into Alabama for college ball. But not only that, the current book I just finished deals quite heavily with Alabama, though not on the football field.
March volume 3 deals with the March from Selma to Montgomery Alabama in 1965 and the trials and struggles of African American civil rights leader John Lewis. The 2nd volume of the graphic novel won an Eisner this past year and I am pretty sure this 3rd will take home a prize in 2017. This book has it all – soaring highs and devastating lows, inspiring sacrifice and horrific brutality, saintly non-violence and ugly intolerance and racism. I think this entire series, co-written by Representative John Lewis, who was the main character in the book, is something everyone should read to gain insight into the reality of the civil rights movement. When you hear about the riots caused by the likes of Rodney King, the Freguson shooting, Black Lives Matter, and protesting the election of Donald Trump, I really think these people should take a break and read about how real civil rights leaders made a difference and changed the world – not with violence, but with love.
This 3 volume series is definitely worth a read.
Lego Batman
Just saw this trailer and am looking forward to the movie. I enjoyed the Lego Movie, so I think this one should be good as well.
