League of @#~!@# at 4K
Ok…I got my new computer yesterday and was all excited to get it set up and give League a whirl. Of course I set up anti-virus and firewall and updated all my drivers making sure things were good to go. I downloaded League from the NA servers and was all set to fire it up this morning.
Well, the severs were down. Great! Of course it had to be when I was trying something new and was excited to play. So I wait…and wait…and servers are up.
Cool, I launch into the game and…what’s up with the miniature loading screen? Well, I know my username and password so maybe it’ll correct itself when I get to the game proper…ah…nope…the main screen is tiny as well, and in this larger black box…hmm. Do I try a game?
Sure, I fire up a custom game and pick a random champ…it certainly looks like it works, but though the champ – Graves – looks normal sized and the minions and turrets look the correct size, the text is unreadably small.
Queue the music for a troubleshooting montage…
I think I’ve got it. I upped the chat text size and a bunch of other settings and think I’ve got things in a state where I can deal with things a little smaller, but not tiny. I mean, really…I’m not getting any younger and my eyesight isn’t what it used to be…
So I try an ARAM to see how it plays. Champion Select screen works…loading screen works…the match starts…
And I top out at 4 FPS!!!! WHAT???
An upgrade from a 680M to a 980M and my FPS drops from 60+ to 4 – WTF??? Needless to say the game was unplayable…though I did pick up a kill as Aatrox by mashing buttons.
Time to query the Google oracle.
Oh…League does not fully support 4K resolution??? (I’m not sure who Targon’s Blade is, but looking at his profile, he seems kinda authoritative)
Well, I suppose my excitement of playing League at 4K is gonna have to wait till Riot gets their act together…probably next season…sometime after all the early 4K adopters have moved on to other things.
So disappointed…
Maybe I’ll check if DOTA or HotS has 4K gaming.
I’d not be surprised if the “no 4k support yet” is thing you encounter in game while companies tweak all the settings to allow it.
Yeah I kinda expect that now, but you gotta figure there are a bunch of displays and the new video cards that can support 4K so they will hopefully keep up with what their consumers are using.
I don’t expect they’ll update the graphics necessarily, but they should at least support scaling.
