Listening To The Adventure Zone
Today I listened to a great podcast…The Adventure Zone from Maximum Fun. Actually, I was catching up on a bunch of shows since they are now on episode 42 which was released June 16th, while I was listening from episode 18 which was released last July 2nd. Almost a year old, but that doesn’t change the fact that the story they tell is fun.
Petals to the Metal
While I started at episode 18, I listened to almost all the episodes in the Petals to the Metal storyline, getting halfway through episode 26. This takes the team from the initiation of the hunt for Raven, a master criminal in the city of Goldcliff, all the way through an exciting battle up a 20 story building to a race that makes the Phantom Menace look tame.
Actually, I’ll back up a bit…The Adventure Zone follows the team of Taako, Merle, and Magnus though a Dungeons & Dragons adventure, and it is very entertaining. The characters are run by the McElroys and DM’d by them as well. The three brothers and their dad form a pretty good storytelling group and I find the mixture of combat, creative problem solving, and clever situations makes for an interesting tale.
The fun ranges from Merle charming Steven the Goldfish and making him poo, to battles against Trent the Treant, to a high speed race along the lines of Wacky Racers meets Fury Road. Each episode has a mix of fighting, saving throws that enable characters to climb over each other or jump from car to car, and witty repartee.
I’m excited to listen to the end of the story and find out what happens in the race, and obviously, the team has moved beyond this story. I just ran outta time today. If you get a chance and like podcasts, Dungeons & Dragons, or just fantasy with interesting modern twists, you’ll love these guys.
