Single or Multiple Topics in a Post

Something I always have issues with when putting together posts is trying to figure out what I want to write about. I don’t usually know what I’m gonna put together before I start, not even when I’m doing something I’ve planned or outlined. I usually still end up drifting off topic or adding in new items. So I ask myself – should my posts cover a single topic each or is it ok to have multiple subjects in a single post?

Single Subject

I suppose the argument for a single topic per post is that it allows better organization and categorization. It also lets readers know mostly what you’re talking about – are you covering comics in this post or WoW, are you talking about blogging or sports, do I want to read this post about Eve Online or skip to the one about League of Legends? A single topic per post makes it easier to understand what the point of the post is…if there is a point.

Multiple Topics

Most of my posts, though, seem to end up without a point. I tend to ramble from subject to subject and game to game, throwing multiple things into a single post. My brain always seems to be going in a bunch of directions when I sit down to write and I end up rambling from one item to another. This always makes coming up with a title for the post difficult since I don’t always have a common thread running through my meandering.

Decisions

I suppose the decision lies with the individual and with their blogging style. Either way is perfectly fine and can work with any topic. Or you can even mix and match like I do. I’ll throw together a big post about a comic book I just read but then the next day cover WoW, League of Legends, and baseball all in one post. I suppose the other option would be to split that last post into 3 separate single topic posts, but do I really want 3 posts in a day? Does that work well? I’m not sure, I’ll have to give that a try.

However you decide to go, have fun. Blogging is an enjoyable hobby and stressing over something you hope to derive pleasure from defeats the purpose. Just go with how you’re feeling at the time and enjoy yourself.

Of course, that’s just my opinion.
