Curse of San Diego Sports
Congratulations to the Cleveland Cavaliers for winning the 2016 NBA Championship.
It was a pretty good series of games even if most of the individual games seemed like a blowout except for the last. And while LeBron and company deserve all the accolades they’ll get for winning, it leaves my town with a dubious distinction…
The Curse of San Diego Sports
San Diego is the longest suffering city with a championship drought among cities with multiple sports teams. According to Wikipedia, the San Diego Chargers last won any kind of championship back in 1963 when they took the AFL Championship before there was a Super Bowl and before the AFL and NFL merged. The Padres…well, they’ve made it to the World Series a couple times, but have collectively won a single game.
It’s no wonder the Chargers’ ownership wants to take the team to LA. Los Angeles is a winning town. They’ve won 5 (6 if you count the Angels as LA – I don’t) championships in NFL, NBA, and MLB since 2000, and they didn’t even have a football team in all that time. That puts them second to only Boston who has 8 (though the Patriots have been shown to be cheaters more than once during that time) in the big 3 sports championships – Super Bowl, NBA Finals, and World Series. Throw in Stanley Cup victories, and LA gets 3 more trophies.
53 Years and Counting
So what’s the deal? San Diego doesn’t have a goat to deal with. They didn’t sell the Bambino to the Yankees. They’ve had some really good teams since 1963 and the best they can claim is they made it to the big show.
I don’t know what it is, San Diego is a pretty decent sports town and we’ve had some really good players come through – Tony Gwynn, Junior Seau, Trevor Hoffman. But nothing seems to push them to the top.
Oh well, I’ll still route for the home team (unless they’re playing the Angels) and hope for the best…someday we’ll have to have a championship in San Diego.
