With EQN Gone, How Long for Wildstar
Everquest Next
So I guess Everquest Next is not going to happen. Sad to see that a game following on such a venerable franchise has failed before given a chance. I was really hoping for the game and am a bit ticked off since I signed up for Landmark in the knowledge that it was gonna be the foundation of EQN. So now there is nothing really in the Everquest delivery chain. Sure, they keep cranking out expansions to EQ1 and EQ2, but those are just iterations on the old. Nothing new is on the horizon to bring people into the franchise, just progression servers to cater to those nostalgic for better times. I guess I can’t say it wasn’t unexpected with all the problems they had been facing, but I do have a sense of loss for something I never had.
Wildstar
Another game on the brink is Wildstar. They just keep reporting bad news and I guess there are new layoffs. At this point, I’m pretty sure they are down to a single North American and European server…how long will they keep those up? Actually, I have little faith they’ll last long – I’m still pissed off at the betrayal NCSoft inflicted upon me when they shut down City of Heroes. I suppose that’s why I never really got into Wildstar. I gave it a chance…played for a few levels, and liked what I saw. The SciFi setting gave it a cool new feel for an MMO, but it was still NCSoft. Not everyone liked the cartoonish character models, but I did…but it was still NCSoft. I guess one of the biggest complaints I saw was that it was too hardcore…too grindy. I usually don’t mind those things, but it was NCSoft.
Now that it is nearly gone, I feel a bit guilty for never really giving it a chance. Did I let my distrust of a company prevent me from playing a game that I would enjoy? Probably.
Perhaps I should give it a shot…now that it is almost gone…I can never do that for Everquest Next…it was never released…but this is still NCSoft.
We’ll see…
