Finishing off Badlands and Shannara
Yesterday was a movie day and today was a catch up day. Little did I realize that the shows I was binge watching were written and produced by the same people. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar created and wrote both Into the Badlands And The Shannara Chronicles for television. And I’ve found both of them to be enjoyable.
I watched the back half of Into the Badlands and was pleasantly surprised to learn the series was picked up for a second season. The martial arts in the show was really cool and I’m not sure there’s another series on TV that depicts such kick ass combat on a regular basis. The first season was short but I think it laid out a future world that could easily contain many stories and the introduction of the monks in the last couple of episodes really opened up the possibilities. With the chaos of the last showdown, who knows where they will go next year. And yes…the next season is set to air next year, in 2017.
The Shannara Chronicles was also a fun watch. Being on MTV, of course the actors are nice to look at, but they actually perform pretty well too. I haven’t read the books this was based on, but I’m inclined to give them a shot with how well the story was portrayed in the show. It’s kinda like Lord of the Rings with the magic and politics of elves and humans, but I love how they have it set in the future. They travel from Seattle to San Fransisco and I keep looking for other familiar landmarks. As a tv show, it’s not as epic as Lord of the Rings, but I does a good job of filling in while waiting for Game of Thrones to come back. I hope it gets picked up for another season.
Why are there so many post-apocalyptic shows on the air today.

I read the Shannara books something like 30 years ago and barely remember them at all, so it was more or less like I was going into that show with no pre-conceived notions. My wife remembered the book better than I did and kept pointing out changes, but I just kind a went “whatever” and enjoyed it for what it was.
I’ll have to give Into the Badlands a look. i’d never even heard of it.
