Wurm Unlimited Looks Interesting
I'm not sure how I feel about this, but Wurm Online is coming to Steam in a new version called Wurm Unlimited.
This new version will be a standalone that can be played solo and a player can go into 'GM' mode and adjust most of the features.
I'm not so sure about this since the game in the online version asks the player to invest quite a bit of effort to get most things done – it IS a grindy game, but I feel like I've done something when I build a house or a boat or whatever I do. GM mode to me sounds like a cheat and I wonder how many people will want to play the difficult and grindy online version when they can play easy mode as GM.
I'll give the game a chance and buy it when it goes live on Steam though and maybe try to get some friends together for a small private server. I could see something like the Newbie Blogger Initiative or Blaugust crew playing on a private server on an new map for a month or so.
What do you all think of the chance to go solo in a Wurm world? Or set up a private server?

I’m looking forward to playing this solo or maybe with a few friends. I’ll probably tune it so that it’s not as grindy as WO but still hard enough to be challenging. I enjoy WO in general but I don’t have as much time as I did before and I don’t really want a second job for my gaming time.
While I think that type of play is great for gamers – we should have options to play the game the way we want – I’m not so sure it’s good for the game – people won’t be playing Wurm Online anymore and there weren’t too many of them in the first place.
I smell a very similar game to Reign of Kings. Problem, is you play it for a few weeks and then after losing everything you have built several times you then lack the confidence to go out and build again. Is Wurm worth getting?
I’ve enjoyed the sandbox MMO and I can kinda see the appeal of the standalone version, but I’ve haven’t given it a try yet. If you can get a group of people to connect to a standalone server, I could see some fun to be had, but I don’t really see it as a single player game. The way I see it, Minecraft is a decent game for solo play, but really shines when you get people to build stuff on a common server – Wurm would fall into the same category if all you want to do solo is build up a medieval town and castle – I never really saw it as a combat type game.
