Mr Robot Finale
Mr Robot Finale
Wow! This show has been so entertaining and enjoyable I am surprised it is not on a pay channel. The story has been great, the cinematography has been impressive, and I think the acting has been pretty good as well. I suppose that when I started watching this show, I expected a typical hacker takes on the big corporation storyline, and while it does contain that, there is so much more to this show.
It's basically a hacker working for a computer security firm that wants to take down Evil corp – yes that is the actual name, thought the big E symbol certainly looks like Dell. The hacker, Elliot, has a bunch of compatriots (not really friends) who essentially perform a heist type endeavor to encrypt all the data on the Evil corp computers. Anarchy ensues as the world markets can't get to their money and society starts breaking down. That's basically where season one ends, and I am happy to see there will be a second season.
A basic story, but the details are where this show really shines. Elliot is kinda a druggie who is required to see a shrink for something I either don't recall or they never told us…it is not relevant I don't think. He's also basically a modern cyber-Robin Hood type character who hacks into the lives of people who impact the lives of those around him for example, he exposed his psychologist's boyfriend's wife and he took down a drug gang that was taking advantage of his neighbor. Of course he doesn't get anything out of it (except a dog), but he feels he is putting things right in his little corner of the world.
There is so much that goes on, I could not do it justice to try to summarize it all, but it is so cool. I know I've said it before, but it just think of Fight Club meets American Psycho meets Hackers meets a bit of Robin Hood, all with a touch of Philip K. Dick's uncertainty of reality.
The season finale was postponed a week because of the on-air shootings on a couple of journalists. Now that I've seen the episode, I see there is a small correlation with one scene where an exec of Evil corp does himself in during an interview. I can see how it would have touched on a sensitive nerve if aired the same day, so I'm glad they held off a week.
More importantly, I am so glad they are continuing the story by giving the show a second season. I just hope it doesn't succumb to a sophomore slump.
Somewhere earlier this week, I heard that there are over 400 scripted television shows in production this year and I would rate this in the top 10. Up there with Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. If you haven't seen it yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a chance. You won't be disappointed.
