Random Roundup

Just a few random things for today.

Hello Kitty is not a cat!

Sanrio has confirmed that Hello Kitty is a little British girl rather than a feline. According to SanrioTown, the official Hello Kitty fans site:

Hello Kitty is a cheerful and happy little girl with a heart of gold. She lives in London with her mama (Mary White), papa (George White), and her twin sister Mimmy.

This biography has been confirmed by Sanrio, Hello Kitty's creators, as preparations are being made for the 40th anniversary and the 1st Hello Kitty Con in Los Angeles October 30 – November 2.

Finding out the truth after 40 years is pretty daunting. I never considered that she was a little girl, but then she is never portrayed as a standard cat on 4 legs either. And she's British – I never watched any of the cartoons, but I don't recall anyone mentioning an accent. In any case, I am pretty surprised that something that has been around for most of my life still has secrets.

Random Game Stuff

Stardock Entertainment is making the Galactic Empires III beta available now from Steam. I enjoyed the previous versions of the game and look forward to seeing what they have added in this iteration.

Eve Online released it's Hyperion update and I had to go through the same process with my Zone Alarm anti virus program as I did last time. This update includes features for wormholes, a new type of mission called a 'Burner' mission that is kinda like a boss fight with frigates, and the ability to share overviews. I think the overview sharing will be great – it is really tough going out into space with a different overview than the rest of your fleet. Being able to share will make it a lot easier to not shoot blues unless you really want to. I think with the wormhole updates, I may have to resub my WH character and give her a few months of playtime again since I pretty much put her on the shelf last year.

The World of Tanks championships are this weekend. On Saturday, August 30th,the finals can be watched on Twitch. Which by the way was in the news this week as Amazon decided to buy Twitch.tv for just under $1 billion. More consolidation in the gaming media – I just hope Amazon does not screw up a pretty decent service.

I scored a point in Swing Copters

I didn't get on the Flappy Bird train until 2 days before it was removed from the App Store, and I didn't play more that a few attempts. Swing Copters is the next game from developer Dong Nguyen and it is just as hard if not more difficult (I got up to 4 points in Flappy). I think I am lucky in that I don't get obsessed with these type of games. I'll give them a try, but I am not compelled to attain a certain score or beat my friends. Most probably because I am not very good at them, but also because I don't want to put in the amount of time and effort to get good at it. I am definitely more of a casual gamer and in this case, I'm glad for that.

Second Season

I also just found out that Halt and Catch Fire was renewed by AMC for a second season. I am pretty happy about his. I was worried since the ratings were not stellar, but the show was good. If you haven't taken the time to watch the first season, you have plenty of time before the summer 2015 return.
