My Top 5 Shows of This Week of August 22

This week, I did not watch too much TV. With the fantasy football draft and Bout of Books, I spent a lot of time focused on other things. I did get in some shows – enough to make my top 5 for the week and a few extras.

The first thing I want to mention is the Simpsons marathon that is going on. I haven't watched the whole thing, but whenever I peek, I am reminded of how good some of the episodes have been over the years. 25+ seasons is an incredible achievement. Makes you wonder how many more seasons they've got in them. I hope for a bunch more.

Funny how The Simpsons is still going strong when so many shows can't make it past 1 or 2 seasons.

On to this week's shows…True Blood keeps going on towards the final episode. I'm really not enjoying the season – some shows have a questionable last episode like The Sopranos or Lost, but this show seems to be having a questionable last season. As bad as I thought last season was, they are barely just going through the motions this last season.

Top Five

Number 5 on my list this week is The Last Ship season 1 episode 9 – Trials. I enjoyed the episode, but they spent too much time sitting in the lab watching people be sick. After the action of the previous week, this was a definite let down, but the story was still good and I am intrigued that they are bringing people on the mainland US back into the story. I am looking forward to the season finale.

Number 4 is Outlander season 1 episode 2 – Castle Leoch. With this episode, they are starting to flesh out the world in 1743, and the suspicions are building some good intrigue. I think the fact that they cut down on all the sex of the pilot episode helped a lot too – let's continue to have story instead of just sex.

My third show for this week is a new show called Legends. This stars Sean Bean as an operative of a spy agency. In the pilot we learn that he tends to work under deep cover and now is having some questions about who he really is. There are a lot of good points to this show so far and I loved the action – this may be the successor of 24. I hope they can keep the long term story arc going as it is developing in interesting ways.

Second this week was The Bridge, season 2 episode 6. I loved how Fry blew up at his work – I think a lot of people would love to do exactly what he did. I'm sure he'll still be around as a freelance journalist though – the DEA is still feeding him information after all. Beyond that, things got really interesting in Mexico as Sonya kills a cop and Fausto has the prosecutor killed so Eva's testimony is useless. Whoever did not expect that the prosecutor had a short life expectancy…

Number one on my list this week is The Leftovers season 1 episode 8 – Cairo. This was great – the whole scene with Patti was intense and certainly made me feel torn. I wanted him to kill her, but did not want him to descend to that low. And did Dean really say he was a guardian angel? Thus show seems to be getting better, I only fear that I will miss it once the season is over. It may be one show that I watch the replay of though since there is so much I feel I am not fully understanding. So much makes me like this show – this is definitely a successor to Lost and I think my favorite show right now. I am just so glad they are not constantly hitting us with depressed and desperate people every week.

In any case, those are my top 5. I also watched The Strain which is ok, and Defiance, which just barely missed my top 5, and a few other shows, but not as many as a typical week.

Bout of Books

While I watched all these shows this week and did my fantasy football draft, I also did a bunch of reading. I did. It reach my goal of finishing Deadly Curiosities, but I did get through half of the book. It's a good book and I hope to finish it this week or at least before the book club meets.
