The Terminator will be back in 2015
Having lived through the apocalypse that was Arnold Schwarzenegger's California, I find myself surprised that I am excited about the prospects of Terminator: Genesis. I much prefer Arnie on the big screen rather than in Sacramento, but when I first saw the Terminator, he was a physically dominant, 30 something, machine of destruction that had won the Mr. Olympia title only 4 years prior. Can he really be as imposing 30 years later? And they are looking to build another trilogy with this 'reboot'. Will a 70 year old steroid-shriveled cyborg really be as intimidating when he proclaims “I'll be back”?
SciFi Classic
I loved the original Terminator and consider it a SciFi classic. I enjoyed Judgment Day for it's action and incredible special effects that were ground breaking. I barely remember the third movie, Rise of the Machines – I think it had a female Terminator. And I think Batman stared in a 4th movie with the Terminator name.
In all, as a movie franchise, I have been entertained. Although after the mess that were 3 and 4, I though that we had seen the end of the movies.
Decent Television Show
The Sarah Connor Chronicles was a decent foray into the television world, but I don't think they got their feet under them until they had turned away too many potential viewers. It was, of course, on the Fox network, which loves to cancel scifi series – particularly when they are getting good.
Personally, I think the timing was wrong on the series with the Governator in office in Galifornia.
Hopes for Genesis
In the long run, I am hoping that Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clark) and Dr. Who (Matt Smith) can make this a fun movie, and that James Cameron can bring back the writing that made the first movie a SciFi classic. As far as Arnie goes, I wonder how much he will actually be in it considering his stunt/body double will certainly earn his paycheck.
I suppose, though, that with the wonderful special effects that the franchise is famous for, if they can make a liquid metal cyborg, they should be able to make an AARP member look like he belongs chasing people around in the concrete river beds of Los Angeles.
We'll have wait until 2015 to find out.
